Kitchen cabinet and wardrobe materials: which should you choose?

Samples of plywood, laminate, aluminium and quartz used for kitchen cabinets

The material inside a cabinet decides how long it lasts. Two kitchens can look identical on the day they’re installed and age completely differently in a humid Malaysian home. This guide compares the common boards, finishes and worktops so you can make an informed choice with your carpentry contractor.

Door and surface finishes

  • Laminate (HPL): durable, scratch-resistant, hundreds of colours and wood grains. The most popular choice.
  • 2K spray paint: smooth, seamless and modern. Chips are harder to repair.
  • Timber veneer: real wood surface for a premium look. Needs care around water.
  • Acrylic or high-gloss: reflective and bright, but shows fingerprints.
Wet kitchen with aluminium cabinets and quartz worktop
Aluminium carcasses are a practical choice for wet kitchens.

Worktops

  • Quartz: non-porous, stain-resistant and low maintenance.
  • Solid surface: seamless joints and repairable, but less heat-resistant.
  • Granite: very hard and heat-resistant; needs sealing.
  • Compact laminate: slim and affordable for dry kitchens.

Hardware matters as much as boards

Soft-close hinges, full-extension drawer runners and lift-up systems take the daily wear. Ask your contractor which brands they use and what the hardware warranty covers.

Our recommendation

For most Malaysian homes: plywood carcass with laminate doors in the dry kitchen, aluminium in the wet kitchen, and quartz worktops. For wardrobes, melamine board works well in air-conditioned bedrooms. If you’re styling a whole room, read our guide to Japandi and Muji style, then book a free measurement for a 3D design.
